Røros is not a place you just visit. It's just as much an atmosphere you step into and become part of. Here, history isn't locked behind glass - it's in the wooden floor that creaks under your shoes, in the smell of fresh wood from the fireplace on the corner, and in the proud look of the local potter shaping a cup by hand. Just like her great-grandfather did. Here are some of the experiences that make Røros unique:
The reverberations of the copper works
In the Olavsgruva mine at Storwartz, 50 meters below ground, darkness is your companion. Lamplight flickers over rock walls scarred by thousands of blows - each mark a silent testimony of men who mined copper for kingdoms. The temperature is a constant 5°C, the humidity gets in your hair, and suddenly you understand why the workers called the mine "the eternal darkness".
But the story doesn't end here. In the center of Bergstaden awaits Smelthytta, where you'll see miniature models of the mining operations and copper plates that were once exported to Europe - and may have been on the ceiling of Versailles.
Streets, houses and people
It's easy to understand why Røros is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is known for its narrow streets and old wooden houses, and there are still people living in these houses. Take a walk down Kjerkgata and look at the windows, colors and details - no two houses are alike.
There are no large advertising signs or modern facades to disturb the whole, and you can almost hear the sound of horses and sleighs in the snow in winter.
Art, crafts and unique shops
Røros has always been a town for creative people who can make something with their hands. Today you'll find small shops and workshops on almost every street, selling everything from ceramics and jewelry to wool, wood products and local design.
Visit Lysgaard Keramikk, Lanullva or Amneusgården Krambu, for example, to see real craftsmanship up close. Here you can buy something that is actually made in Røros and has a history.

Food and drink with a difference
Røros is renowned for its local food - and it shows on the menus. Try reindeer, smoked meat, cheeses from Rørosmeieriet or baked goods from Bakeriet på Røros. In the restaurants, you'll be served ingredients from the area, and in the cafés it's a short distance from your coffee cup to the conversation with your neighbor at the next table.
Several places also offer beer tastings and food experiences with stories about local traditions.
Nature right outside the door
Nature is always close at hand in Røros, and it's a short distance from the town center to the plateau. Here you can go hiking in Femundsmarka or Forollhogna National Park, try mountain biking on Rørosvidda, go fishing in quiet mountain lakes, or join a dog sledding, snowmobile safari or canoe trip.
In winter, there are miles of ski trails to guide you where you need to go. In the summer, it's just as natural to bring a packed lunch and go exploring on marked trails, or using your camera as a compass.
Sami culture and reindeer
Røros is also a center for South Sami culture. At the Rørosrein farm, you can meet reindeer herding families, hear stories about Sami traditions and taste food made from reindeer meat. If it's winter, you can join a reindeer sleigh ride across snow-covered plains and learn more about life in the mountains.
Events and atmosphere
Sometimes it feels like the whole town is gathered outside. Rørosmartnan in February is a highlight - a winter market with horse-drawn sleighs, stalls, people in the traditional garment kofte, and warm smiles in the snowy weather. In the summer, there are concerts, theater and festivals, and you can experience everything from outdoor opera to small concerts in the backyards.

wished myself home to the firehouse north of Rugelsjøen."- Johan Falkberget
Small and big moments
Whether you want to spend the day strolling between shops, enjoying a cup of coffee in the sunshine, going on a mine tour or just enjoying the silence out on the plateau, Røros is a place where there is room to breathe - and to fill your days with what you want.
Røros is not a place you just see - it's a place you feel in all your senses. Welcome to the mountain town that gives you time, stories and experiences to take with you.
